What

On the prod relay, every huddle liveness batch fails:

Huddle liveness linkage batch failed: database error: error returned from database: syntax error at or near "JSON"

huddle_started_links (crates/buzz-db/src/store/event.rs) tests start-event content with IS JSON OBJECT, which needs Postgres 16. Prod RDS runs Postgres 15. CI runs Postgres 16, so CI did not catch it.

This was the only Postgres 16-only construct I found in Rust SQL, migrations and schema/schema.sql.

Fix

The query now works the same way as the per-link checks (huddle_started_link_exists*):

  1. SQL only narrows the candidates to start events whose content mentions the session ID (ILIKE '%' || backing.id::text || '%'). The creator, channel, kind and 512-byte limits are unchanged.
  2. huddle_started_content_links parses each candidate in Rust. Postgres 15 can't test whether text is valid JSON without raising an error.
  3. Rows come newest first for each session. Each session keeps its newest valid link, so a newer malformed start can't hide an older valid one.

Liveness and authorization now use the same rule for what counts as a link.

Tested

  • huddle_started_links_batches_valid_creator_links_and_ignores_malformed_content now also has a newer start that mentions the session ID but isn't valid JSON.
    • It passes on postgres:15 (15.19) and postgres:16 (16.14).
    • With the old query, it fails on Postgres 15 with the prod error: syntax error at or near "JSON".
  • All 49 store::event Postgres tests pass on Postgres 15.
  • buzz-relay huddle unit tests pass.
  • cargo clippy -p buzz-db --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean.

CI still runs Postgres 16 only, while prod runs 15. A Postgres 15 job would catch this class of error.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved the reliability of session link selection when newer event data is malformed or doesn’t match the session. In these cases, an earlier valid link can now be selected instead, helping ensure sessions retain the correct link despite invalid or unrelated newer entries.

huddle_started_links tested start content with `IS JSON OBJECT`, which
needs Postgres 16. Prod runs 15, so every liveness batch failed with
"syntax error at or near JSON".

SQL now only narrows candidates to start events that mention the session
ID, and huddle_started_content_links decides, as the per-link checks
already do. Each session keeps its newest valid link, so a newer
malformed start cannot hide an older valid one.

📝 Walkthrough

The huddle link lookup now filters candidate event content by session UUID substring, then parses and checks candidates in Rust. It skips malformed or nonmatching candidates and retains the newest valid link per session.

Changes: Huddle link lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter and validate link candidates
crates/buzz-db/src/store/event.rs
The query selects candidate content using a case-insensitive session UUID substring match. Rust parses candidates in newest-first order and emits a link only when the parsed ephemeral_channel_id matches. The test fixture adds malformed JSON containing the UUID.

Sessions with extensive start-event history can make liveness lookups slow and memory-intensive. Bound candidate buffering before merging unless that risk is explicitly accepted.
